Abstract
The squamous carcinoma of the breast is known to be very rare. In making the histologic diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the breast, care is necessary to avoid confusion with solid -undifferentiated carcinoma in which the cells are often flat, polygonal and bear a super ficial resemblance to squamous cells. True squamous cells are distinguished by two features, either or both of which should be present intercellular bridge (prickle-cell formation) and keratin formation. Judged by these rigid criteria, squamous cell carcinoma of. breast is very rare tumor.
The possible histogenesis of squamous carcinoma of breast is as followings.
1. From epidermoid cysts undergoing malignant change
2. By squamous cell metaplasia with malignant change in fibro-adenomas
3. As nest of squamous cells in medullary carcinomas
4. As squamous cell carcinoma arising from the epidermis of the areola or skin overlying the breast.
Two cases of squamous carcinoma of the breast are described and the literatures are briefly reviewed.
